I can easily see that my Ameritrade shares are part of the individual investor count. But my 401k through Fidelity? Is that counted as an individual or an institution? If institutions just aggregate the numbers for their own account and those of their investors, our participation may be greater than 80 percent of the float.
I understand from other comments that 401k and EFTs are “institutional”. I have had one thru my employer for almost 25 years and have never had a proxy vote sent over to me before (and never actually cared before!).
Indirectly, this may be correct. Fidelity has their own funds (comprised of AMC shares) and if you have them in your 401k portfolio, you may be “owning” them again via their institutional ownership. I also have a 401k through Fidelity so now I’m curious and going to check into it.
